Although the apprentices seem at ease with their eccentric master, their behavior suggests the frustrations of London's thousands of apprentices, widely proposed by critics as targets for Heywood's flattery and encouragement (e.g., Burnett, 32-33). With opportunities for advancement limited, some 3/5 of the apprentices never completed their terms, according to Steve Rappaport (311), many ending up among the masterless men so familiar in early modern writing on the poor links of london Red and White and Black Valentine Bracelet.
