Aspects of Links of London

Thus recorded in a sort of receipt defining theft for theft as commercial exchange, Jack's charge goes unanswered,8 and the alleged interference with conventional inheritance perhaps suggests one route toward the concentration of capital in mercantilist holdings. links of london Jack's theft suggests one response: "ile not want," says Jack, "since he hath enough" (line 634).Other characters occupy dependent situations comparable to Jack's, and the play does not hide the grim aspects of economic rearrangement, its tendency to create and prolong "the impoverishment of innumerable small master craftsmen, journey apprentices, and casual laborers" described by, among others, Catharina Lis and Hugo SoIy (67ff.). Links of London Jewellery As one of Gresham's factors, the hypocritical Puritan Timothy Thinbeard, for example, endures manipulation and browbeating even from Jack, and he is later arrested at Hobson's suit and saved from hanging through Hobson's intercession. Like Jack, Links of London Necklace he robs those whom he serves. We also see John Rowland, called Tawnycoat for most of the play (and John Goodfellow at one point), who peddles the goods he buys from Hobson and who, when he falls to poverty, survives on Hobson's offer of credit; his story (discussed below) graphically illustrates the vulnerability inherent in the "universal reliance on credit amongst chapmen" which Margaret Spufford demonstrates (83). Hobson's apprentices are also of interest, sneaking off to taverns (lines 173ff.) in violation of the conditions typically specified in indenture agreements (see Rappaport, 234, for example). Although the apprentices seem at ease with their eccentric master, their behavior suggests the frustrations of London's thousands of apprentices, widely proposed by critics as targets for Heywood's flattery and encouragement (e.g., Burnett, 32-33). With opportunities for advancement limited, some 3/5 of the apprentices never completed their terms, according to Steve Rappaport (311), many ending up among the masterless men so familiar in early modern writing on the poor links of london Red and White and Black Valentine Bracelet.
